If you’ve ever visited the town of Sibiu, it’s hard to believe that you haven’t seen the Brukenthal Palace. Maybe you didn’t visit the museum itself, but you sure couldn’t have missed the imposing building from the (old) central area of the city, because it stands out no matter what. Well, if you would have entered the Brukenthal Museum and walked around, you might have notices the furniture collection exhibited there. Sure, there are a lot of things to be seen at the Brukenthal, including special paintings and other works of art, but we believe that „art furniture”, as they very well call it, knows how to make itself visible.
So the first museum open in Central and Eastern Europe hosts about 200 pieces of furniture from past centuries (starting with the 16th and until the 19th), most of them being Romanian, which makes their collection unique.
In fact, mere words can’t really describe the exhibit, so we’re definitely inviting you to check it out, because it is surely worth seeing how the elegant, beautifully massive, curved or glazed (according to each trend that passed), richly ornamented and highly thoroughly crafted furniture of the rich in Sibiu used to look like. The South German, North Italian and Austrian influences penetrated our artisans’ style, and their talent and skills deeply transformed nut, Turkish peanut, cherry (at times even rose, mahogany or other exotic species brought from Central and South America) wood. In the end, their hands shaped furniture for clothes, cabinets, tables, chairs, desks and all sorts of pieces, in a variety of styles (according to the time frame mentioned above): baroque, neo-classical, rococo and so on.
The experience of visiting that furniture exhibit is a mix of time travelling, endurance lesson (because the furniture, even restored, where it might have needed some touches, looks impeccable) and a sample of pride, since the furniture of the wealthy Romanians who lived in that era was exactly as refined as the one owned by the other rich men of Europe. Trust us and take some time for a trip into the world of beauty and „art furniture”.
Experienta vizitarii este in egala masura o calatorie in timp, o lectie de durabilitate (caci mobilierul, fie el si resturat unde a fost cazul, arata impecabil) si o mostra de mandrie, caci mobila romanilor instariti din acele vremuri nu era cu nimic mai prejos decat cea a bogatilor din restul Europei. Dedicati-va cu incredere putin timp pentru un drum in lumea frumosului si a „mobilei de arta”.
